Phrase Echo
Purpose: Call-and-response ear training. The computer plays a short phrase from a
real Highland tune; you echo it on your verified digital practice chanter. Note names stay
hidden during the call and your response — they only appear if you miss. Scoring uses
pitch changes (continuous-sounding digitals are fine). Acoustic + room mic is not
supported for pitch games.
Before you play
-
Digital signal ready (
why digital).
-
Profile saved in Manage Chanters.
-
Optional check in Chanter Test.
Cold start without a practice-ready profile is locked on purpose. Overview:
Calibrate → test → play.
Steps
-
Open Phrase Echo (or pick it from
Games).
- Choose Beginner (default) or Challenge, phrase length (3–6), and speed.
- Listen to the call (tones + step pulse — no note letters).
- Play the same notes back. Progress chips show how far you are, not which pitch.
-
Beginner: wrong notes do not advance or cost a life — the step waits until you get it
right. Hints replay the target tone (mic pauses so speakers don’t score), then
higher/lower, then the note name. Challenge: a wrong note or timeout costs a life and
reveals the phrase.
- Use Stop anytime to return to the ready screen.
How this differs from Melodic Simon
- Simon grows a visual prefix and shows note letters. Echo keeps a fixed length and hides names.
- Echo always plays tones during the call — ear first.
- Simon is memory of a growing sequence; Echo is short call-and-response drills.
Tips
- Start length 3–4 on Slow until the ear locks in.
- Headphones reduce speaker bleed into the mic during the call.
- Streak counts consecutive correct phrases; a miss resets the streak but you keep playing until lives run out.
Troubleshooting
-
Notes not detected: mic permissions, correct USB/line-in device, then
Chanter Test.
- Call tones confuse scoring: use headphones so the mic doesn’t hear the speakers.
- Call too fast: switch Speed to Slow on the ready screen.
